There are several benefits of using compost as a soil amendment:
  • adds organic matter
  • increases water holding capacity
  • adds nutrients
  • Recommendations and Directions for Use

GENERAL: Till or water in the compost to prevent
sunlight degradation of beneficial soil building microbes.
Avoid contact with chemical fertilizer or pesticide
compounds to protect the natural microorganism balance
in the compost. This compost is a superior soil conditioner,
provides for improved soil moisture retention and improves
    the soil tilth.

NEW LAWNS: Prior to new lawn seeding or sodding,
prepare the soil by tilling in a 1 inch layer of compost.
    This is approximately 3 cu.yds. compost per 1000 sq.ft.

ESTABLISHED LAWNS: Feed the lawn in the spring,
mid-summer and the fall before winter dormancy by top-
dressing with compost and watering the lawn well. On
compacted or sod-bound lawns, mechanically aerate the
    lawn prior to compost application.

GARDENS: Till in a 1/2 inch layer of compost with the
top 6 inches of garden soil. Supplement the soil near the
plants by working in the compost 2 or 3 times during the
growing season. For maximum effect, place the compost in
the bottom of the furrow, cover with a thin layer of soil,
    and then plant the seeds.

POTTED PLANTS: Prepare potting soil by mixing 1 part
compost to 20 parts soil. Feed potted plants by working in a
1/2 inch layer of compost with the existing potting soil
    prior to watering.

TREES AND SHRUBS: Roses, perennial flowers, berries,
bulbs, trees, evergreens and shrubs also benefit from regular
applications of compost. Till in or water in a 1/2 inch layer
of compost around the plant 2 or 3 times per season.
